We Are Prisoners

We Are Prisoners

Have you ever thought that you’re a prisoner? Or worse, a slave? That thought probably never crossed your mind. I mean, we live in a modern society where slavery is (for the most part, thankfully) outlawed. But the truth is harder than that and it isn’t a truth you or hardly anyone else in this world wants to face:

You are a prisoner. We are all slaves to our own desires.

Humans, by nature, are sinners. Think about it for a moment. Being bad doesn’t have to be taught. Babies often get themselves into trouble and they know how to do bad things, like throw fits, not share, and other things that children do. But they have to be taught to be nice.

We all had to.

Being sinful is in our nature and deep inside, we crave the things sin is. What happens is that Satan makes those things look, sound, or feel appealing to us. Drugs make you feel good for a moment, but they desperately hurt your body. Alcohol does the same thing. It seems fun and makes you think you can have a great time with your friends or maybe it feels like it will take away pain or grief, but it strips away your inhibitions and in the end, will cause trouble to your health and possibly even your relationships. Having sex before marriage definitely seems appealing to most everyone but the “restrictions” of having sex only after you’re married to someone are in place for a reason. Sex is meant to be the ultimate act of love, as close as we can come to what love truly is and making our bodies one flesh as it says in the Bible. Doing that with someone random, someone whom you haven’t made the covenant of marriage with, violates that act of love. Cussing seems fun and it seems like it adds extra emphasis into your sentences and can seem funny but in reality, words can hurt a person, even those sometimes meant as a joke. When in fact, if you could grow your vocabulary, you would have far more creative ways of saying the same thing without the foul language involved.

I could go on and on here but I’m certain you understand what I’m saying. Sin seems appealing but that’s just the lie we believe because that’s what Satan has made us believe. The truth is that sin tears us further and further away from God. Some of us don’t care about Him or even believe He exists but it all comes down to this:

God is holy. Holy and righteous and pure.

Every time we sin, we stain ourselves. He is holy, so he cannot abide by sin. That makes us enemies of God.

The amazing thing is that, He doesn’t want us to be His enemies but He also has to be just. In the same way that a judge would convict a man who raped and murdered a woman, God must give us our due punishment for our sin against Him and His Holy Nature. The problem is that the punishment for sin is death.

So God came down as Man, gave His only Son, Jesus, to suffer and die on the cross for our sins. He took our sin and God’s wrath upon Himself, so that we wouldn’t have to take that punishment. He came back to life, for us. All we have to do is believe and trust in Jesus, and we will be saved.

But it doesn’t stop there.

Each and every time you give into sin, into that temporary pleasure, whether it’s alcohol, porn, drugs, sex before marriage, foul language, anger, and more, you’re a slave to your own desires. You’re a slave to sin and giving in to Satan and what he wants you to do each and every time.

Why would you choose imprisonment and enslavement over freedom? You’re bound in chains of sin and all the while God is waiting for you with the key but you refuse to accept the key and choose, instead, to stay in chains, bound, helpless, afraid, and lost.

God has the freedom for you, my friend. But salvation is a gift and you have to accept it first. Each and every person has their own choice.

What will yours be?
